Who We Are
Rugged individualism and the conscientious desire for quality are at the roots of J.P. Bartlett Company.
Over the years the Bartlett family has owned and operated their business on one main belief; everything has to start with offering a quality product. For over 50 years we have specialized in breeding a vigorous zonal geranium, ideal for garden plantings. We are proud to offer over forty varieties of J.P. Bartlett geraniums, most of which were bred in our own lab. Laura Bartlett Abrams (pictured right) is the third generation making sure the business is still operated on the same traditions and principles.
Laura, like her father John, is very modest. Reluctant to speak about her own accomplishments, she’d rather tell you how her employees are the heart and soul of the company. You will have a better chance of finding her working in the greenhouses amongst the employees than her office. Holding true to her father’s belief that, “you’ll never get to the top without learning the bottom as well.” Laura started working at the family greenhouses in 1978, since then she has reached many milestones.
In 2003, she was elected the first female president of Massachusetts Flower Growers’ Association. During her time, she made sure that the Legislative Branch knew that agriculture is still a growing commodity in Massachusetts. Laura remains a familiar face in the agriculture industry, actively the Chairperson of Sudbury’s Agricultural Commission, passing Right-to-Farm Bylaws; she helps and encourages other towns to form Ag. Commissions. Also, she currently sits on the AFBF (American Farm Bureau Federation) commodity advisory board. With fifteen other members in the industry, they review the main issues coming out of Washington that can potentially impact the industry.
But the highlight of her career is coming soon, leading the family greenhouse business to their 100 year anniversary.
J.P. Bartlett Company operates from one location in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Our seven acre facility services the industry year round. Alongside our line of geraniums, we have bred the Liberty™ Calibrachoa series. Following up on customer feedback, we have increased our selection of vegetative annual material. You will find we offer a diverse line of well known, non-patented varieties. After shipping rooted and unrooted material across the nation from August until Mid-April, we transition to a northeast wholesale supplier of finished geraniums, annuals, vegetables, and herbs, in the spring and early summer.
We can relate to our customers in similar ways. In March, towards the end of winter shipping, we are busy planting our own spring crop. We offer a complete line of geraniums and annuals in various sizes to accommodate both garden centers and landscapers. From 3” vinca and dracaena to 12” combination planters/hangers we offer a huge selection for customers both large and small. We hand pick every plant to ensure customers receive the quality they deserve.
